Alumnus
Kenneth (Ken) Koo is the Group Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Tai Chong Cheang Steamship Co. (H.K.) Ltd., a major Hong Kong shipping company that is celebrating its centenary this year, and is also the father of HKIS alumni Emily Koo ’06, Edward Koo ’08 and Ellen Koo ’12
Ken served as President of the HKIS Alumni Association for six years, and according to an article in Dragon Tales (Summer 2010), he “has been an invaluable and staunch supporter and driver” of the association. “Perhaps more than any other individual, he is responsible for perpetuating the positive interaction between generations of HKIS Alumni,” and “is passionate about preserving and recording the history of HKIS. Not only that which has already passed but also protecting and recording the present as it develops to become part of the HKIS story.”
In 2007, along with Desmond Chu ’91, Ken set-up the annual James Handrich Service Endowment, which furthers HKIS’ mission, and in particular the Student Learning Results of “Self-Motivated Learning” and “Contributing to Society.” Ever since he has donated generously to the endowment.
Ken was a joint recipient (with Charles Watson ’09) of the Bob Christian Alumnus of the Year Award 2009/10 for his dedication to HKIS spanning over two decades, and for exemplifying the true spirit of the HKIS Mission and SLRs.
Mark Sheldon, who was the Director of HKIS’s Office of Institutional Advancement (as it was then called) from 2006 to 2009, described Ken as “one of the most loyal parents and alumni of the School, head of the Alumni Association for many years, very generous in supporting the school and the Alumni Association with his time, energy, local contacts, and financial resources. He’s one of the true local Hong Kong supporters of HKIS over many many years, and I can’t think of anyone who represents local alums better than Ken.”
