Charles Soule ’93

Alumnus

Charles Soule ’93 is a comic-book writer, musician, and attorney. He is best known for writing Daredevil, She-Hulk, Death of Wolverine, and various Star Wars comics from Marvel Comics, and his creator-owned series Letter 44 from Oni Press.

He received his undergraduate degree in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, with a concentration in Chinese language and history, from the University of Pennsylvania, and later graduated from Columbia Law School. He lives in New York City.

Charles’ sister and HKIS alumna Hannah Soule ’94 said proudly, “I cannot remember a time when we were little that my brother Charles didn’t have a stack of comic books next to him. He loved the graphic art, the storytelling and the fantastic feats of his comic heroes, and he devoured them every chance he got. Charles’ comic journey began after he graduated from Columbia Law. After practicing in NYC for several years, specializing in immigration law, Charles wanted to challenge himself on a creative level again, going back to his first love of writing and comics. DC Comics heard of his self-published successes and asked him to pen several of their books. From there, Marvel Comics came calling and he is once again using parts of our childhood as inspiration for his work on the Star Wars comics and X-Men. It isn’t often that one makes the leap from the buttoned-up world of law to the whirlwind world of comics, but I think Charles probably owes a lot of that gumption to the time we spent in Hong Kong. The HKIS community was so accepting and nurturing. It didn’t matter if you were a ‘brainy’ kid, you could be an artist as well. Students could star in the musical and still triumph on the rugby field. There were no limits, and I think Charles tries to infuse this attitude in the heroes he writes about now, so hopefully his readers will find their own bit of faith to take the path less traveled.”
