Teachers: Lino 2002-now, Florence 2005-now
Florence and Lino Santos are both teachers in the HKIS Middle School – Florence started as a Learning Specialist in 2005, was a Grade 6 teacher from 2007 to 2013, and has been a Grade 7/8 Social Studies Teacher since then, while her husband Lino has been a Religious Education teacher since 2002.
Parent Ching Ju Yeh commented, “Mrs. Santos is a wonderful teacher who insists on a high quality of education for students, provides them the solid fundamental skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking, and instills in them essential values such as honesty, diligence, self-discipline, and compassion. She and Mr. Santos have also devoted their time to leading the Matrix Club, which helps refugees in Hong Kong. She has a great positive impact on our HKIS community and touches many people’s hearts.”
Linda Anderson, HKIS’ Director of Curriculum and Assessment, had great praise for both teachers, saying, “We hired Lino from Jaipur to be our first Middle School Religious Education teacher. We saw in him the qualities of someone who would not only teach RE, but who would support and foster our Spirituality student learning result – someone who would promote respect for and appreciation of diversity; someone who would celebrate different perspectives, while living Christian values; someone who would foster the growth of compassion and service in the Middle School.”
Florence was hired later as a Grade 6 teacher, then as a Grade 7/8 teacher.
Florence and Lino have lived up to those expectations through their service work with the Matrix Club, their outreach to refugees and to other needy groups in Hong Kong. Lino has worked to embed compassion projects within the RE curriculum in the Middle School and has played a key role in shaping our new RE standards and philosophy.
Both Florence and Lino have enriched the intellectual life and service outreach of the Middle School. They continue to bring different perspectives and model what it means to have ‘a heart for compassion.’
“They both love movies and discussing current events. They have undoubtedly inspired many Middle School students to engage in service and in celebrating diversity and differences of perspective.”
