Lucy Doyle ’96

Alumna

Dr. Lucy Doyle was the recipient of the Bob Christian Alumna of the Year Award 2011/12 for her inspiring work with Médecins Sans Frontières (“MSF”, or Doctors Without Borders) in Africa.

After graduating from HKIS, Lucy went to Georgetown University, then spent time in Hong Kong and Shanghai refining her Putonghua and studying at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She then attended Cornell Medical College in the US from 2004 and 2008, and completed her internal medicine residency in 2011 at New York’s Bellevue Hospital.

She  joined MSF and completed missions in refugee camps in Kenya treating displaced victims of war and starvation. She also worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo, an isolated and war-torn region, supporting local doctors and nurses care for patients with limited access to health care who were suffering the health consequences of ongoing armed conflict. When Lucy returned to HKIS in October 2012 to receive the Bob Christian Alumna of the Year Award, she spoke to the school’s Humanities I in Action class about her experiences working for MSF.

In November 2012, Lucy served with MSF in the US to treat victims of the catastrophic Superstorm Sandy. HKIS Humanities teacher George Coombs commented, “Lucy has selflessly dedicated her valuable skills and education to the treatment of disease, hunger, and violent injury in the most challenging parts of the world. She has committed her heart to compassion and her life to service globally. Her dedicated service demonstrates to the HKIS community the meaning and importance of Contributing to Society.”

Lucy now lives in Seattle, Washington, and works at a hospital there.
