Social Studies Reflection Post

In the first four lessons, I learned a lot of prejudice, stereotypes, identity and racism. I felt that during the lessons, I really reflected on how I act and what my mind was doing when I first meet someone I also got to know me better, other than reflecting on what I was doing, I noticed that identity is not something other people create for you, but something that you create, who you think you are. From the presentations, I learned a lot of about my fellow classmates, what they went through what their relatives went through. Some stories made me respect them more for example in one of my classmates story, he was bullied at such a young age not knowing what was going on. I did not just learn about my classmates, I also learned about my own family, my father. I never knew that my father had to go through what he went through for about 5 to 8 years, being bullied by other people and not being paid that same amount. I think that the important thing I got out from these four classes and the presentation is that everyone might or have experience racism, stereotypes and people will be the one judging other people based on their race and how they look.

Overall I feel that if we see another race, we will judge them from what we know. It is something that we can’t help doing. I also think that race does effect the way we see other people not us, for example. Chinese people are suppose to be skinny smart and nerdy, but I know that I am not smart for an Asian standard. I know what I can or can not do.

Science Questions

1. What are you going to build (8th grade)?

I am going to be building a wind powered phone charger.

2. Why have you decided to build this object (energy transfer system) a working model (8th grade)?

I have decided to build this object because we decided that it would be creative and interesting to build something so different. Also most people have been building solar powered, so we decided that it would be interesting and a bit challenging to build a wind powered phone charger.

3. What materials are you going to need to complete your build  (8th grade)?

We are going to need a fan, motor, crocodile clips, cigarette USB phone charger, and a cigarette phone charger to complete our build. For the first model we were going to build our own fan blade with cardboard paper, but we later decided to buy one instead since it was either too flimsy or a little too thick.

US Government Unit 6, 8-10

I feel that overall I did not do well in this unit and am not happy with the grades I got, I think that I could have done a lot of thing differently such as methods I used to study for tests , using better notes, instead of bullet points and many more. Besides the bad grades, I learned a a lot about myself, the way I study and the way I do things, such as procrastinating. One thing that worked for me was studying with friends, this helped me because when I am studying alone, I many have missed some key points that I need to know, but studying with a friend helps me make sure I got everything.  Some of the things that did not work for me was studying two or three days before which I learned on the first test.

Unit 1 Reflection

What did I learn:

For Social studies unit 1, we have been building something called the KTW chart (Know Think Why), we started building these charts from the very beginning of the unit, we started to slowly add more information as the unit went on. Beside the KTW chats, we have been reading TCI text books. Understanding how they lived, and taking advantage of their resources. Also have been learning how geography influenced how Native Americans lived.

Favorite:

My favorite part of the unit was the dancing section, even though we did not have a lot of time preparing it as we did last year in 7th grade, I had a lot of fun. During this small project I learned how some of the Native American tribes thought the world came to be, or certain animals. I also loved watching my classmates dancing their story they have been reading about.

Badge:

This unit I got the Senecca Badge silver. I agree with Mr. Pierce, because my grades have been a bit on ME and a bit of AE. I also think that I could have done better with my grades and that I did not try my hardest. My work habits have also been inconstant and consistent, which I think I could work one.

What Worked and What Didn’t:

For this unit I think what worked was the the big paper we had to work on because it helped be study for the test since I got all the main points already on the paper it made it easy remember. Something that didn’t work was the way I studied, I tried studying and then take a break, but the break was longer than the studying which did not help, also I did not give myself enough time to study.

Learning Goal:

My learning goal is to study at least a week early, so that I don’t have to stress last minute, and I would like to have a plan for what I am going to be studying each day.  Also I would like to put in more effort when I am reading my textbook, and really concentrate.

Current Events: Occupy Hong Kong

Hong Kong protestors started their protest on September 28 2014. The thousand of protestors have been blocking main streets and sitting near the Government building wanting to have a forced discussion about Beijing influences on Hong Kong, the protest is also causing some banks and schools to close. As the protesters go on their second week, many of the locals are getting frustrated and getting violent with the protestors, since it is disrupting their life. Many of the small shops in Mong Kok have noticed that they are losing business and money.

I think that Hong Kong protestors will not be getting what they want, due to the fact that Hong Kong protestors have been disturbing many peoples lives, causing business to lose money. Residents of Mong Kok have been getting frustrated and are getting violent with the protesters, and yelling at them. But the protestors reply with a song. This reminds me of the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, when students wanted freedom. Chinese governments thought that they were going to tire out and quit, which they almost did. Then later on June 4th 1989 the Chinese troop fired at the citizens and had tanks roll over people, thousands of men died.

Some of the questions I still have is, what is the government going to do? Is the government going to try and “tire them out” and see if they would leave? But if it does take weeks to “tire them out”  won’t the economy be affected and  won’t people be losing jobs? To prevent this from happening, small shop owners could possibly get violent, does this mean that there would be more violence then intended and would china act upon it or help, or would they just leave it and let citizens fight against each other? I plan to ask my parents and do some research on my own for my questions.

Types of Sentence

There are three main sentence, simple, compound, and complex. A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb and it shows a complete thought. Example: The teacher stared at Andrew. The teacher is the subject, with stared as the verb and Andrew as the object. A simple sentence can also be called  an independent clause.

The compound sentence is made up of two independent clause or a complete sentence, the two independent clause is connected with a conjunction Example: The bus pulled into the station but didn’t collect any passengers. The but is the conjunction which connects the two independent clause The bus pull into the station and didn’t collect any passengers.

The complex sentence is made up of several parts of a clause, one part is called the Main Clause. The main clause contains the main information followed by subordinate clause which give out more information about what is happening, since you need to connect your main clause with your subordinate clause you use subordinating conjunction.

Writing

In LA we have been working on personal narratives, brainstorming, learning about snapshot+thought shot+ dialogue=scene and learning about good hooks and endings. We also have been using graphic organisers to organise your two stories, one of them which is a embarrassing or funny moment and the other is about a crazy moment that happened to  you.  Before we even started using the organiser we practiced on personal narratives called “The follower” and “I confess”.
