Are the Socs and Greasers really that different? Why? Why not?
March 19, 2015
From the first 3 chapters, I can see some major differences between the Socs and Greasers. Such as, the fact that the Greasers stay on the East side of town and the Socs stay at the west side of town. And also the Socs seem to be a lot meaner and as the term as Cherry used “sophisticated” and Greasers “feel more violently”. So from the first 3 chapter I see that the Socs and Greasers are very different in terms of lifestyle and the way they act.
Are there any connections to can make to any of the characters and/or their situations?
March 19, 2015
From the first 3 chapters, I have made some connections to the situations that the Character in “The Outsiders’ have had. Such as Sodapop having the horse that wasn’t his. I have had friends that have cool stuff and when I was younger I would hang out with a friend who had a rocket ship that I really wanted. And whenever I went to his house I would always fight for the rocket because I thought it was always mine. Another connection is that when Ponyboy was screaming his head off and forgot that Cherry and Marcia were right there listen to them. I have had conversations with people that get me really frustrated and I forget, sometimes, that a guest or a bystander may be standing or sitting right next to me.
Why do you think Johnny killed Bob?
He killed Bob because Johnny was beat up by Bob a while back and he was the one that traumatised him. And as he said if he ever gets jumped again he will kill the one who jumped him.
What could have been some alternatives?
One alternative is that he could have just threatened to kill Bob but not actually do it. Another was he could have fought Bob, knocked him out, and ran away with Ponyboy.
What do you think Ponyboy and Johnny’s situation prompted Ponyboy’s recitation of “Nothing Gold Can Stay”?
Because before he ran away from Darry he was having the best of times with Cherry Valance, Marcia, and Johnny in the movie theater. And that changed into something that basically ruined his life and now he is forced into this situation which is hard for him. So during his time his Cherry he thought that it was the best time every like gold, but now the gold has left thus reciting the poem.
Who is innocent? Who has experience? (Think about all characters)
I think the innocent person here is Ponyboy because he was drowning in the fountain while the Socs were beating him up. Also his family, Sodapop, and Darry, are also innocent because they did not know what happened with Ponyboy until after Bob died. As for experience, I think Dally definitely has some experience of murder from New York so he is able to help Ponyboy and Johnny. It also seems that Johnny has some experience with this situation, being the one with the idea to change their hair and have a disguise.

1. What is the difference between Cherry Valance the Soc and Cherry Valance the dreamer?
Cherry Valance the Soc is a person who hangs with her boyfriend Bob and with other Socs. She also buys a lot of things and does only think about herself. Cherry the dreamer on the other hand is a person who lives simply, with what she has. She does not like fighting and wants to stop it.
2. Are Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally heroes? Why? Why not?
The 3 boys are heroes because they did nothing wrong. The reason Johnny killed Bob was to protect Ponyboy and the reason Ponyboy ran with Johnny was to save him from the fuzz. And Dally hit Ponyboy to save him from the fire. From what these boys say, the things they did was wrong but what they did for was for the good and that is why they are all heroes.
3. How do we know that Darry does truly care for Ponyboy?
We can tell Darry truly cares for him by the way he shouts at him. He shouts at him at times where parents are worried about their own children, when they are out late, and when they don’t know where they are. He also does not hate Ponyboy because in Chapter 6 he cried when he was in the hospital not because he saw Ponyboy but because he was sorry that he hit him.

1. Write about what you understand about Cherry’s line “I could fall in love with Dallas Winston. I hope I never see him again or I will.”
What Cherry means by that is she is in love with Dally. But because of the social separation she will not be able to fall in love with him. And also the fact that she has/had a boyfriend makes Cherry have a limit on her relationship with him.
2.In realizing that Cherry has green eyes what does this signify for Ponyboy and his understanding of people and the world?
By realizing this he now knows that there is a middle ground between the 2 groups. There is a person who does not want to be a part of this fighting, or this problem between the 2 groups. And also for the fact that he hates guys with green eyes like socs, it does not mean that all people who are socs are all bad. There are some like Randy and Cherry that hate fighting that are good, and they just want to live life to the fullest, simply.
During the Government Unit I think I did a good job of understanding the topics in each chapter such as the Bill of Rights and the three branches of government. The only problem I had was on Chapter 8 with the Compromises and the treaties of the north western lands. Next time, I would really like to take more notes and more often because the only chapter I didn’t take notes on was Chapter 8 which was the worst one for me. The best strategy I think was the taking of notes strategy because this helped me review the whole chapter for a test and with highlighting the important notes this made the job easier. What didn’t work was not taking down notes and just reading the chapter over and over because I would leave out minor details when reading that, in turn could have given me a better score. For the next test I would take down notes and revise it by highlighting the important parts and my questions so I could answer them myself.

1. For our PBL Project my group is planning to build a mechanism that can automatically turn off a light switch without pressing a switch.
2.We have decided to build this because to me this is a regular problem that happens to me and some of my group mates. We wanted to make a machine or mechanism that can turn off a switch without actually pressing the button. Energy transfers could be: Kinetic, Mechanical, back to Kinetic.
3.We would need a motion sensor, a motor, generator, a battery pack, and a piece of wood or cardboard.
Set of Questions 2:
1. Who is in your group and what has been your role in the group in terms of taking initiative to successfully select and complete your group’s project?
My group consisted of Jonah, Krish, and I. My role was managing Jonah and Krish to keep doing their jobs and stop going of task although I also discovered and taught my self the mechanics of creating a circuit for the lights and motors.
2. How do you feel about how you have learned new knowledge in doing this project?
I feel happy about learning how to set up my own set of lights and motors using batteries and buttons.
3. How has your group overcome problems or difficulties in accomplishing your task?
Our group has had problems such as the motion sensor not working and we have overcome this by always having backup plans such as the idea of using the door to press the switch for the lights.
Originally I was basing my pot on the Greek pot named Kantharos which is almost like what I made. It helped me think of what to do and when I first saw it it was the pot that was also in my head. In the Greek diagram the handles are supposed to hang over the lip but I made it equal and the neck is supposed to be a lot thinner than what I made. The main body of the cup was also originally supposed to go straight up but instead I made it a curve/bowl shape. I think pottery is a relevant form of art because it helps me create my own design like what I changed in the pot. And this is important because it helps me make decisions that are important liking the handles and the neck that supports the body. I think my pot is an interpretation because originally I did not want to create a point exactly the same as the diagram rather I wanted to add my own style to it. But the main idea is still the same. To make it different I would fix the handle and work more on it because I only had a brief time to work on the handles and there are cracks on it that makes the handles almost unusable.
We first got a slab and used a third of the slab as the base. We made the base by using making the third of the slab to a ball then flattening it into a flat circle. We used a container for paint as a size comparison. So the base was a little bit bigger than the container base. For the walls we used the remaining two thirds of the slab and used a roller to flatten it and make it longer. And we then rolled it using the roller then flipping every time we rolled and straightened the edges to prevent it from turning into a round edge. We then wrapped the slab onto the paint container and scratch and slipped it together with the base and covered the entire container. We closed the edge by using scratch and slip as well. The container had paper around it to prevent the clay from sticking to the clay. The most important aspect of this lantern was using the paint container as the size comparison so it had the right size of walls and base. And without the container it would be a lot harder because we would have to estimate the sizes of the base and walls and if they didn’t match we would have to start over.
This is my shadow box, the story I created was about a dragon who lives inside of a lamp post. He is nocturnal so during the morning or day he sleeps and during the night he wakes up and lights up the lamp post. And when the sun goes back up he sleeps and the cycle begins again and again. 2 differences between my shadow box and Hari and Deepti’s is that his character do not have any holes in them, mine on the other hide is covered in them. Another difference is that their art uses all of the box mine only uses the sides and bottom. A similarity is that we both use silhouette for our characters. Another similarity is that we both use different layers for our backgrounds, foregrounds, and middle. An area for improvement is that I need to work on time management and thinking about how to make my ideas work. Because I did not know how to make my silhouette.
In my design process, I am in the process of putting and cutting out my main character and deciding if I want to make it a silhouette or not. I also need to put a hole though my box to put the light inside it. I feel good about my progress in the time we have left to finish this project I feel I can finish it in that time. Some challenges are making the scores in the background because I have one score that is connected to a tiny piece of paper that can break easily. Also the moon was a challenge on how I should do it because I wasn’t sure to put a piece of paper in the back with just a moon on it. A success is that the backgrounds that I made were easy to make and look good and have the design I have in my head.
From the 3 news articles I have read they mostly all have the same facts such as Hong Kong Protesters want to have their own choice in choosing who they want to elect. They want Beijing to give them democracy or the freedom for them to choose who they want to elect. I have also read that the fourth night, Wednesday, was when the protesters started to break. It was when the protesters started to shrink or give up, knowing that these protests would do nothing. Also the use of teargas of the police on the students was not expected by the students, they say that it was uncalled for and Craig Choy a spokesperson of Hong Kong Civil Liberties Union says it should not have been used.
My opinion is that I agree with some of the protesters that protesting against Beijing will most likely result to nothing, especially with Beijing and the police force not softening their advances. I do think it is good that the youth of Hong Kong are trying to fight what they believe and want such as Joshua Wong, a student who lead the Scholarism. I am still unsure what side I am on because the protests are disrupting some of the peace in Hong Kong especially those who want no part of this, I want the peace to stay throughout the Hong Kong. Even though I am not yet old enough to understand fully what is happening or to participate I want my own choice when I grow up to pick who I want to lead me.
Why do people want to be on Beijing’s side? Do they want to be controlled or do they want to have only one perspective to which country or government is the best? I want to learn about what is in the mind of the people who are in the pro-Beijing side because I don’t understand why they want to be on the Communist side rather that the Democracy side. And even with the protesters knowing that most likely nothing will happen how are they still able to stand their ground and protests?
