Unit 4: Community Center for Refugees in HK

Written Reflection:

2) Explain who your design is for. Who makes up the particular community? (You may have to do some research or think back to Ms. Chan’s talk)

This design was best fit for a refugee community center. This building that we designed had both the apartment blocks for the refugees and a community facilities for refugees such as a pool, a garden, a rooftop and a fireplace. We began this process by making a brain frame to outline the needs of the refugees and how we were going to meet them. For example, the need safety was met by having locks and a security system. The who of who makes up this particular community are obviously the refugees. The refugees living in this complex are not at the best time of their life right now and all I would that we could do is make it as enjoyable as possible. 

3) Explain what your design is inspired by. What ideas and inspirations helped shape your design? Use specific examples from your model to share.

Our design is inspired by modern architecture and having lots of openness and glass. This was portrayed in our sculpture because we had a cylinder that was entirely covered in glass which made the greenery and water stand out even more. Ideas such as buildings near nature that were made out of glass which were eco-friendly inspired the process of the building of our sculpture.

4) Explain where you envision your design to be located (in Hong Kong) AND how that shaped your building design (Think back to Mr. Leung’s talk)

From Mr. Leung’s talk, I can envision our sculpture to be somewhere in the New Territories for two main reasons. The first reason because our sculpture has a lot of nature and such around which would be perfect in the New Territories where there is less touched land. Secondly, our building is very large, therefore it would only be feasible to have a building that size in an area where land is less expensive.


5) Explain why your building is relevant. What needs are you meeting and how are you doing that?

Our building is relevant for many reasons. The first reason being that not everyone in Hong Kong have the luxury of being near nature and greenery, however in our building, we have surrounded the building in greenery and nature so that the building and its surroundings are more visually appealing. Secondly, there is a big safety component that was met during the building of our building. This idea was inspired from the Kowloon Walls City where the crime rates were incredibly high. We thought to battle this by having an intricate security system where you can only reach your flat if you have your key. Thirdly, the need of community is being met by having the first two floors of our building just being community centers such as pools, lounges and gyms.


6) How are you addressing the need of beauty in your design? (How is your design contributing to making life more beautiful?)

The need of beauty is very heavily being addressed in our building. If one were to look at our building, it is needless to say that it is quite visually appealing. This is because of all the greenery including trees that have taken over the surroundings of our building. Additionally, I had the idea of including real rocks from the HKIS garden to give it a more nature effect. Thirdly, we created a water stream that went through the outside area of the building which brought water into our building. Fourthly, having a rooftop that had a fireplace which represents community to me and having trees on the roof are such a huge sign of beauty. Lastly, the glass that outlines the entire building allows the building to be even more beautiful because everything is clear.

7) What design element are your most proud of?

The design element that I am most proud of the actual making of our building. This was done by first sketching and planning out our ideas. Then, we traced styrofoam paper to create circular levels for the building. Following that, we then made a clear, small cylinder in the middle of the structure to hold the floors up, which also doubled as a glass elevator. To finish it off, we then used clear plastic to outline the building with the help of clear, double sided tape.

8) What design element needs further refinement and improvement?

I think that we could have improved on making the tree more withstanding. The trees that we built were indeed good however there was much room for improvement. There was constant trouble of holding the trees up so that they would not fall down. We would have always glue back trees that have fallen over. Additionally, the leaves on the trees were made very messily which did on one hand give a rough effect that was nice but then on the other hand it looked messy and unput together.

9) In your opinion, how important is architecture? Provide a definition of architecture and explain its relevance in your life and in our society.

The definition of architecture is the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. The relevance of architecture in our life and in our society is so prevalent but sometimes we forget how much it is. Every building we walk into, every sculpture that is standing all made through the beautiful process of architecture. Without architecture, we would not have the buildings that we spend most of our time in, we would not have the beautiful homes and houses that hold and family’s life and we would not have buildings that hold up our society. Before this project, I had little to no interest in the study and process of architecture and building buildings. However, no that we have finished this project, I can say that I am very interested in exploring architecture even more in the future.

Who is it for:

The amphitheatre is for the entire HKIS community to connect the school and give an open affect to the school.

What is the design:

The design is based off of the ancient Roman amphitheatres that opens up an area.

Where is it:

This actually takes the body of the entire school by being the outline. All the lockers and the classroom are on the inside walls of the rings of the amphitheatre.

Why was it made:

The amphitheatre was made to open up the school and create a more outside affect at the school. On a sunny day at HKIS, the amphitheatre helps to extenuate beautiful day.

Do you notice anything that could be improved about the space:

The amphitheatre has very tall, high stairs that are a hassle to step on and are a hazard. Although there are also small stairs, the large stairs are not the strongest architectural point.

  3. What are you doing to transform the book?

I used the medium to glue my book together making it a solid object. From there I took some pages in the middle to make a border in the middle to separate the two sides of the book. I have one of my sides as a “good” side where the chalkboard (the border)where they are good lessons and it is neat and tidy. The other side of the chalkboard is the “bad” side where the pages are all messed up as well as the lessons of the chalkboard are bad lessons for life.

  1. How are your ideas original?

I have not ever seen someone that did this because I am using the physical book to make two sides then showing the two different types of learning; good learning and bad learning.

  1. What techniques are you using to create your sculpture? (Collage, newspaper form, diorama, etc)\

I have used cutting on both sides of the chalkboard as well as using the medium to make my book a solid object.

  1. Evaluate your craftsmanship – how much care and attention to detail are you putting into your sculpture?

I am putting quite a lot of the detail into my project because I have to make sure that everything is as good as it can be. With the medium holing the book together well and the chalk paper being good there is a lot of things to watch out for.

  1. Evaluate your time management – how are you using your time?

At this point, I am using a lot of my time just decorating and exaggerating both sides of my book.

  1. What improvements could you make?

I could probably make the chalkboard look a lot nicer (maybe not neater on the bad side for affect) but just making it look nicer.

Book Art Research


This Book Art has cut outs in both sides of the book to create indented beautiful figures. I think that this is an incredible piece of art because it shows to different works of art on both sides of the book.


The piece of book art above has some very complex detailing throughout it to produce a wonderful piece of book art. This is really interesting to me because it shows different levels.


This piece of book art has a beautiful, symmetrical, infinite-like pattern that has been made my cutting out certain parts of the book. This piece of book art especially stands out to me because this is a interwoven pattern that can represent how difficult and complex that world is, yet it is somehow woven together.

2) Describe what you made

I created a cover from my sculpture sketchbook. Shown on my sketchbook is my name, the word sculpture as well as my grade and class number. The book and created is in place to hold my thoughts, sketches and ideas for the sculpture class. This book was put together by firstly creating a cover made from hard paper, then poking holes with a harmer and nail into all the pages of the book. After these steps were completed, I then used a string and needle to sew the pages of the book together in order to finish the process of the creating the book. Lastly, I decorated the cover page.

3) What is the purpose of your sketchbook in class?

I believe that the purpose for my sketchbook in class to document my thinking, sketches and ideas during this semester of sculpture. Before I start to make a sculpture, I can make a quick, rough sketch to organize my ideas before actually transferring them to a physical sculpture. Although most sculpting does not involve at 2D drawing as the end product, I still believe that it is exceedingly important to initially have a 2D drawing as a draft for the sculpture.

4) What are the benefits of making your own sketchbook vs purchasing a mass produced sketchbook?

Some benefits of making your own sketchbook rather than purchasing a sketchbook is firstly really understand the process of making something rather than buying it. Also, learning how to sew is another plus. Experiencing the process of actually making a book is a lot more appreciated and memorable than just buying a book.

5) What would you do differently to make the sketchbook?

If I had the chance to re-do my sketchbook, I would try harder to make sure the pages were bounded together stronger as well as that the string was sown. In addition, I would want to re do the cover page and draw/make something more creative and pleasant to look at. However, I still think my sketchbook is decent and will be a very important component to the sculpture class.

This is a very interesting sculpture to be because it represents so much. The sculpture is in Poland. Throughout many years Poland has been a big passageway for many people but some people do not make it through Poland to go to their final destination. I feel that this sculpture represents this.

A Scene From The World War With Real-Size Statues

This sculpture in Turkey represents a real battle that happened in The World War. This commemorates that battle that the country had to go through and their victories throughout the war. The sculpture has much representation for the soldiers that fought in the war.
