Heat Transfer

Why are metals good conductors of heat?

Metal’s atoms are close together so when heat is applied, it gives the atom more energy and one atom will pass the vibration making a domino affect.

Why does hot water and air rise?

Hot water rises because it’s less dense than cold water and once you heat water, it increases the temperature and decreases the density. The less dense hot water is, the more it rises.

How fire gets transferred to your hand the thermal energy radiates through space from the sun.

Conduction is the process of thermal energy between particles of matter that are touching. The transfer of thermal energy is called heat. Particles of warmer matter have more energy and move more quickly than the particles of cooler matter. When both particles collide they both transfer some of their thermal energy to the color particles.

Convection is the transfer of thermal energy by particles moving through a gas or liquid. When particles inside area of gas or liquid gain energy they move more quickly, have more collision and spread farther apart.

Thermal Radiation is the transfer of thermal energy by waves that can travel through air or even through empty space. Thermal energy reach objects they transfer the energy to the objects to warm them up. This is how thermal energy from a fire to your hands and how thermal energy from the sun is transferred to earth.
