  • Reflection, Connection & Personal Response:

I enjoyed this book, not only did I learn about the Nazi’s but I learned about the cold war. This book also told me about the two sides. Since I know both perspectives I know which side i want to be on. Some parts of this book is quite chilling and sad, but its the truth behind history.

Title: The Fault in Our Stars                                     Author: John Green

Genre ~ Non-Fiction / Fiction Type: Realistic Fiction

Opening Sentence:

  • Late in the winter of my seventh year, my mother decided I was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read the same book over and over, ate infrequently, and devoted quite a bit of my abundant free time thinking about death.

  • Favourite word / phrase / sentence:

“There will come a time when all of us are dead. All of us. There will come a time when there are no human beings remaining to remember that anyone ever existed or that our species ever did anything. There will be no one left to remember Aristotle or Cleopatra, let alone you. Everything that we did and built and wrote and thought and discovered will be forgotten and all of this will have been for naught. Maybe that time is coming soon and maybe it is millions of years away, but even if we survive the collapse of our sun, we will not survive forever. There was time before organisms experienced consciousness, and there will be time after. And if the inevitability of human oblivion worries you, I encourage you to ignore it. God knows that’s what everyone else does.”

  • Vocabulary and new terms (with part of speech) and definition:

Veritable – Adjective – To be truly

Myriad – Noun – A great number of people or things

Proverbial – Adjective – Expressed in proverbs

  • Reflection, Connection & Personal Response:

I enjoyed this book, it has lots of drama and some scenes just touch you. It’s an amazing love story that will get to anyone. A sick girl in falling in love with a boy. The ending is sad but all the amazing quotes in this book make up for it. I can’t say I have been “in-love” yet but now I know how some people feel.

Pedantic – Adjective – Ostentatious

  • Reflection, Connection & Personal Response:

This book was thrilling to read, but for my taste I will not continue the series. In my opinion this book is a bit cheesy and not for my liking. But it is very well written. Its Sci-fi/Horror theme is quite hard to connect to.

Genre ~ Non-Fiction / Fiction Type: Non-Fiction, Biography

  Opening Sentence:

When Paul Jobs was mustered out of the Coast Guard after World War II, he made a wager with his crewmates.

  • Favourite word / phrase / sentence:

“There’s some notion that because I was abandoned, I worked very hard so I could do well and make parents wish they had me back, but that’s nonsense.”

This phrase really heart warms me and makes me feel bad for the guy. That one line saying “make parents wish they had me back.”

  • Vocabulary and new terms (with part of speech) and definition:

Mercurial – Adjective – Changeable

Quip – Noun – A clever remark

Commencement – Noun – An act of caring

  • Reflection, Connection & Personal Response:

For my reading level this book was challenging and hard to understand. For the parts I do understand it really thought me a life lesson. Just cause someone says you can’t, really means you can. Nothing is impossible if you have something to drive you.
