Champions Relfection

The thing that I liked most about our Champions project was that we had so much freedom to do things on our own. I liked how there was an outline but there weren’t strict steps for everything. One of the things that I really liked in this project was when we got long periods just to work on whatever we needed to get done. I really liked this because we had a big chunk of time to focus and finish everything up.

I think that something that helped me learn well was the peer checks that we did. This really helped me because I was able to get a lot of feedback from others. I was able to get feedback  from another point of view that I had that I had never really thought of, which helped me make my work a lot better.

Something that I found really hard in this unit was the timeline. This was hard for me because there isn’t a lot of information about Melinda Gates because not many people know who she is. This made is really hard for me to find things about her and then to find important events in her life.

If I were to do this project again, I would choose somebody who is a little more famous than Melinda Gates. I would do this because, like I said before, the research was a little hard for me since Melinda Gates is not very famous. I think that if I choose somebody who is more famous, I can find more information on him/her, and can improved my work.

I think that next year, facebook should be an option for a free choice instead of a mandatory assignment. I think this because since there was a template it was pretty easy to accomplish, easier than the other assignments.

Somethings that I have learned in this unit about China’s population in that a long time ago, China had a bad drought, which led to famine and a drop in the population. I also know that when Mao Ze Dong came to power, he thought that larger families in China would make China more powerful. But China’s population grew too much and in 1979 they established to “one-child policy.” In order to be able to feed everyone in China, they are trying to achieve zero population growth. I also know that most of the electricity from china comes from their power plants that burn coal and pollute the environment. Because China’s population is so large, they are trying to decrease the use of burning coal and increase the use of other, more environmentally friendly sources, like hydroelectric power.

This unit, I am going to try to reach the top level badge. I am going to achieve this by having good work habits, good grades, paying attention and participating in class, and using key terms. Good work habits will help me because it will show that I am a good student and it will also help me study better, which will lead to good grades. I will pay attention and participate in class to show that I have a good attitude. And I will use key terms in my writing to show that I have a good understanding of the topic and what we are learning.

The goal that I had written for this unit was that I wanted to study the packets more and know the vocab words better. We haven’t had a packet this unit, so I couldn’t exactly keep up with that. But I think that I have been okay with my vocab but that I could be doing better with this by studying the vocab more intentionally and more often.

I think that conferences went well because I have been getting pretty good grades and my work habits have been overall consistent. We also talked about getting EEs, and we said that it was about quality, not quantity. My goal for this unit is to try to work towards an EE by always looking at the rubric of the project so that I know what it takes and what I have to do differently than everyone else or differently than usual to get an EE. I will also do this by making sure I use the key terms more often to show my understanding.

S.S. Unit 1 Reflection

This unit, I learned about the different ways that geographers show information on maps and the different types of maps and what they are used for. I learned that the five tools that are used on all maps are: a grid, compass rose, scale, key/legend, and a title. I also learned that all flat maps of Earth have distortion because the Earth is round. I also learned the many different types of maps, for example: vegetation maps, economic maps, topographic maps, etc.

In the survey, I said that one of the things I enjoyed most in this unit was playing the games such as taboo. I think this because it was a lot of fun, a lot more fun than just spending the whole period working on our packets. But it also helped me learn the vocabulary quickly and in a way that I would remember it.

I received the the gold Bartolome De Las Casas Badge. I agree with this because I only got one AE and the rest ME, which means that I couldn’t get the Neil Armstrong Badge because I didn’t get any EEs and I got one AE, but I wouldn’t have gotten the Ferdinand Magellan Badge because I would need to get more AEs. I think that I got the right badge because that level is suppose to be mostly or all MEs, and that’s what I got. I also agree with getting a gold because I think that I have good work habits. I always listen in class and I turn in my assignments on time, and I studied a lot for this test, even if I got an AE.

Something that I did to study for the test last unit was I practiced writing responses to the questions and getting advice from Mr. Pierce on how to improve. This worked well because I got to see how well I could do at the beginning and then I got feedback so I knew what I could work on. I kept revising and editing my paragraphs so much that I think it cam out really well and it was really easy for me to write it when it came to the actual test. Something that didn’t work well was reviewing some parts of the packet. I think that it might have been that I didn’t spend enough time on reviewing the packet, but I missed a couple things that I probably would have gotten correct if I had studied the packet better.

Since one of the things that caused me problems in the last test was most likely because I didn’t study the packets enough, my goal for the next unit is to really pay attention to the packets and make sure I know those things when we are learning them instead of trying to cram all those vocab words a couple days before the test. That way I will have more times to study for the other parts and I will also be able to remember and understand the information from the packet more easily.
