SML Project Reflection #1

Reflection of my 2016 Self Motivated Learning Project

My SML topic making hair styling gel that is easy to use and works well. The hair gel is supposed to be organic, and made from ingredients such as beeswax and coconut oil. I choose this topic because hair styling gel is something I use everyday and after researching, some of the chemicals in commercial hair gel products can cause pimples, hair loss and dandruff. So far, this has been a great experience. I have learned a lot of new things about hair products and have accomplished a lot. During the past few weeks, the only challenge I faced was finding ingredients in Hong Kong such as beeswax and shea butter but I was able to find stores which have those products. I am really proud of what I have achieved so far. I have been able to make different hair gel samples with different aromas and texture. I have done a lot more than I imagined to achieve. SML sessions get me feeling creatives because I am in an environment with people learning about things they have passion for. Seeing classmates doing other projects, spikes my interest and gets me feeling creative to go out to try different things. Over the last few weeks, I have learned that I learn best in an environment where everyone is passionate about learning. SML is a great way to learn about new things and develop you as a person. I have really enjoyed this project.

Romeo and Juliet

Today in class we had to fill out a sheet about our perfect mate, and we had to write down characteristics of a perfect person. We filled out a side and had our parents fill out a side for homework. Some of the traits I wrote down included Athletic, Attractive, Responsible, Adventurous, Humble, Supportive and Unselfish. Some of the traits my mom wrote down included someone Kind, Friendly and someone who has great family value. After looking at these two responses, I can kind of see that my mom would like someone who can take care of the family, someone who puts their husband and children before them. My mom wants someone who can add value to the family and someone who supports everyone. I would like to have a mate like that but to me its important to have someone adventurous, athletic and a risk taker. In my eyes, life is a big adventure where we go over steep mountains and low valleys, and we need a companion to support us through the journey. This companion has to be ready for the challenge, someone who can try new things and take risks. They have to be fearless and live life to the fullest, because you never go when the journey will end.

Champion Project Reflection

The Champion Project we did during the last 9 weeks was one of the best projects this school year. I really enjoyed this project and learned a lot. This project was really interesting. For the Champion, I chose Pele. If you want to find out more about him and the work I did including a journal entry, poems and a map, check out the blog post below. I enjoyed this project because I always wanted to learn about Pele and he is my role model. I play soccer and his work on the pitch really influenced how I play today. I found out many interesting facts along the way and it was cool trying to write pieces in his perspective. During this project, I learned a lot, not only about Pele but also about journals, letters and other things. I spent many hours researching Pele which was very intriguing. There were so may good deeds he had done from such a young age which makes him a remarkable person. I also learned about different writing techniques and how to incorporate a flashback into a journal. One thing challenging about the champion project was that we had to write our nomination letter with a limit of 500 words. This was very challenging for me because I had learned so much about Pele and he accomplished so many great things that I wanted to write everything down. The first draft I did included near to 850 words and even then, I tried to cut down unnecessary sentences. I spent roughly 2 hours in my room trying out new sentence structures and cutting down information. In the end, I was able to get exactly 500 words. If I was going to do this project again, I would choose Winston Churchill. I don’t know much about Winston Churchill but his quotes have really encouraged me to work harder to success. If I could change something in this project, I would something like a movie trailer we have to create based on our Champion. I love making movie trailers and I think it would be a great way to include examples about our Champion and share it with the class. Overall, I really enjoyed the unit and I am sure that future 7th graders will enjoy it as well. This project helped me learn about important traits such as resilience, compassion, creativity and collaboration which changed me as a person. I would like to grow up to be as successful as them so I have started working harder on the subjects I love.

Pele Champion Project

This project is called the Champions Project. Within the 8 week course of this project, we had to learn about one famous person. I chose Pele because I found him very inspirational. We spent multiple lessons in both LA and SS working on assignment related to our champion. In LA class, we had to write a journal, 3 Poems, a Nomination letter and do a press conference in our champions role. In SS, we had to make a map of our champion, timeline and Facebook account. In both classes, we had to make a free choice artefact. I designed a Pele Fifa Cover for my Fifa 15 game. We also had to focus on the four key aspects of a champion; resilience, collaboration, creativity and compassion. Pele was resilient throughout his career because he faced many roadblocks, but found ways around. He faced divorce, poverty, injury and money loss which could have concluded his career but it didn’t stop Pele from pursuing his dream. Pele has amazing collaboration skills with his teammates. He was there to support them and his leadership resulted in Brazil winning three World Cups. What makes Pele so divine, is his eye for goal and creativity with the ball. His skills and unexceptional footwork can trouble any defence. Pele is a very kind individual and is compassionate about unfortunate children. He is a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador and travels the world to visit charities and build hospitals. Pele is a very special player.

Update on Science PBL Project

Our group is really progressing on our model. We have almost all the organs and layout of how the model should work. We are on track and doing a great job. Today our team cooperated really well. We all worked together to try and overcome problems such as leakage and glue coming apart. Some roadblocks we need to overcome include stopping leakages, getting the structure to stand properly and attaching the organs properly to the main body. All we need left to do is finishing the rectum, liver and pancreas as well as the support of the structure. We are doing a great job.

Science PBL Project Questions

1. What body system did you pick to build as a working model?

I picked the digestive system to build as a working model.

2. Why have you decided to build this body system as a working model?

I decided to build this system because I have always been interested in this system. As a boy, I have always wondered how food turns into feces. My parents would always tell me, “eat your vegetables because it is good for you and gives you nutrients.” I would wonder how the vegetables could give me all this energy. I have also thought of a lot of cool ideas for my system and how it should function using hoses.

3. What materials are you going to need to complete your build?

  • Cardboard boxes (a lot for the body and head)
  • Some Color paper (black, white, red)
  • A few Markers (all colors)
  • Glue (at school)
  • Hot glue (at school)
  • Clear Hose (for esophagus) about 1 inch thick and half a meter long.
  • Big hose (wrinkled for large intestine) about 2 inches thick and a meter long
  • Small Hose (wrinkled for small intestine) about 2 centimeters thick and 1 and a half meters long.
  • 2 Food Coloring (green, brown)
  • 20 Rocks (small rocks from beach)
  • 1 Bucket (for water at end)
  • Water (about a cup)
  • Scissors (at school)
  • 3 Spray paint (red, black, brown) if not available, use normal paint
  • 2 Balloons (for liver, red)
  • 2 Ziplock Bags (big one for stomach)
  • A meter String (for jaw)
  • 1 Filter (to prevent rocks from going through, small)

Social Studies Reflection #2

1. This unit I have been learning about the world’s most populous which is China. I have learned about how China has to try and meet such a big goal of  having enough space and food for everyone in the country. They are trying to have a birth rate equal to the number of deaths each year so that the population won’t rise nor decrease. I have thought about the plans China has about generating more clean electricity and promote economic growth but slow down the population growth. I think that China really needs to think about decreasing the number of births because if this continues and China experiences a disaster such as a drought, there won’t be enough food and people will die causing the economy to slow down.

Here is a picture of the population growth in China and how it keeps rising:

2. I am aiming for badge #2 this unit. Last unit I got badge #3 which I was okay with. This year I would like to try and reach for a better badge. I will aim to get this badge my using my more time during weekends to study for upcoming tests in social studies and put in more effort into my work. Some of the work and projects I have done last unit could have been better because I was more rushed and didn’t have time. Now I can take for time to do a better job so that I could receive the second badge.

3. My goal from the last post reflection was to try and find a way to store all my data in a chart or graph so that it can be easy for me to learn and study from. I could make something like a KTW chart which I explained in my last reflection post which helps me store and memorise data. I have started to make a graph with all my information but having frequently checked it. I have been busy and not have a chance to add more information to my chart. Over the next few days, I think it would be a great idea to re-read the chapter and add any important notes into my studying. I could also complete the interactive online reading challenge.

4. I just had my conferences last week and they went very well. I was happy about my grades. For work habits, I got all consistent which is something I am really proud of. During the conferences we also talked about my goals, and things I should improve on. The one thing I found that I should improve on are my critical thinking explanations. I have gotten some AE’s on this part of tests because I usually lose control of the question and write unnecessary things in my answer. My goal is to try to make sure my answers clearly relate to the critical thinking questions because adding unnecessary information can give me lower grades. Over all, I am very happy about my performance in class and hope to keep up the good work.
