Question 1: Why are metals good conductors of heat? Metals are good heat conductors. I will explain why. Inside a material, there are nucleus and electrons. The electrons are attracted and stay with the nucleus. In metal, the electrons aren’t attracted to the nucleus. It is like this in all metal. The free electrons are free so they speed up and whizz around. They collide with the atoms getting warm. It is like a domino effect. They warm up each other once they collide. It is so fast that heat can be transferred up metal in no time.
Question 2: Why does hot water and air rise? Hot water and air rise when they are being heated. The reason why is because the heat make the air and water less dense. The correct term for this is “the buoyancy principle.” Just imagine you have a cork and put it into a glass of water, since it is light and is less dense than water, the force pushes it up and the cork floats. The exact same thing happens to the air and water in this case.
Question 3: How is heat transferred from a campfire to you? Heat is transferred from a camp fire to you and me by convection. The way it works is when an object is warmed up, it causes the molecules above it to speed up. The hot air turns less dense, then the air is conveyed up wards.
Conduction Similarities: This essay will explain the similarities of Conduction and Properties of Matter. In a few of our properties of matter labs, we were dealing with a stove or something else to warm up water. We were warming up and boiling water for different experiments. The way that conduction and properties of matter labs were similar is that when boiling the water. The water gets really warm. The heat makes the glass beaker or plastic beaker warm. The nucleus’s and electrons heat up and bump into each other creating the domino effect. The beaker got too warm so we needed gloves in order to move it around.
Convention Similarities: This essay will explain the similarities of Convention and Properties of Matter. In some of the labs, we were dealing with heat. We boiled and heated up water. Convention took place during our experiments. The way it worked was that once the water was warm and about to boil, there was steam rising from the beaker. This is when the air above starting heating. The molecules were expanding and getting less dense. The heat was then transferred. When we put our hands on top of the beaker, we could feel the heat. It was really warm.
Radiation Similarities: This essay will explain the similarities of Radiation and Properties of Matter. When we were boiling the water in some of the labs. We could feel the heat. The heat was transformed by heat waves, know as radiation. We were standing a distance away from the boiling water, but we could feel the warmth. The heat travelled through heat waves and ended up warming us up. You can see heat waves on a really sunny day, if you stay close to the ground and look across a flat surface, you can see the waves.
The water cycle is also known as the hydrological system. The water cycle is important because it gives water to living organisms which need water to live. First, the water cycle starts by evaporating the water. This is called evaporation. The sun gives of energy and heat so that the water from a lake, ocean and any other body of water can be evaporated. Without the sun, there would be no evaporation leading to no water cycle. The water is evaporated and turns into water vapour since the air is so warm. As the water vapour gets higher in altitude it reaches the next main part of the water cycle, condensation. The air high up in the sky is cold changing the water vapour back into a liquid. The molecules in the water vapour start to clog up and stick with other molecules to create clouds. After this come precipitation. The clouds in the sky are full of water vapour molecules. Once the cloud gets heavy enough, and gravity starts working, it will start raining. Rain can come in snow, hail and sleet. The rain falls down to earth and waters the plants and help organisms grow. After that, the water will be evaporated and the water cycle will start all over again.
