Q4 Goals

Reading:

I want to stay consistent with my reading and word wall. I plan to get at least 30 books in by the end of the year.

Writing:

I am still wanting to work on language. I want to note down the literary techniques I am a bit shaky on but my main thing is to get my writing down on paper and give myself time to edit.

Spring Parent Conference Reflection

I am really quite happy with my conferences. I definitely need to get into quite a few habits such as reading and updating my word wall. Most of my issues sprouted from simply not being organised. In my essays I was not doing so well in my conventions simply because I had not managed my time properly. I spend too much time thinking and not doing. To be more organised in my assignments, I want to cross things off of my planner instead of just writing my homework down. For speaking, I want to film myself before a presentation to see what I need to work on. All in all, I need to be more organised and most importantly get into good habits.

Quarter 2 Goals for Grade 8

For reading, my goal will be to read 8 or 9 books. I have read 7 this quarter but I would like to push my self a little bit more. I will keep track of my progress on the reading log.

My writing writing goal is to develop more than just one character. I was having trouble with character development and almost all of my characters were static. Sometimes the character seemed that it was lacking development. Now that I have managed to increase this skill I would like to become better and also expand this skill to more than just the main protagonist. I will keep track of this by keeping record of my grades on character development on the rubrics.

These are pictures of the persuasive piece. I am generally happy with my score but there is room for improvement. Unlike the last time, I got an ME for language and I am pleased with knowing that I’m Improving.

I got an ME for this reading comprehension. I am very happy and I want to try to at least maintain this score but try to strive for an EE.

After the literary techniques were given back, I realise how many mistakes I must have made regarding identifying with the audience, and expressing my writing with things like, I, making my writing objective. I also need to underline the book titles and put commas where they are needed. As usual in my writing, my main fault which hindered my grade was conventions, due to the lack of editing. I need to get into the mindset that a writing piece is never done when you get your actual writing done. I am constantly not editing to the extent that I should.

I think I did pretty well as I got almost all ME’s. I wish I just gave myself more time to get the conventions more refined and just generally look over the piece more carefully.

Colons

After watching this video on colons, I’ve realised that I have been using them all wrong. I now realise that you can only use it after a complete sentence. This means that if I was writing a Christmas list, this following statement would be wrong: The things I want for Christmas are: a model plane and a drawing book. This is wrong because the statement is a fragment. The correct way would be this: These are the things I want for Christmas: A model plane and a drawing book. That is correct because the sentence before the colon would standalone as a normal sentence. You also never have to capitalise the words A colon just means that there is more to look out for, or see the following.
